Bay Windows
Do bay windows increase my home's resale value?
Yes, bay windows can add resale value by increasing curb appeal, maximizing natural light, and enhancing interior space. In Utah, where buyers value both function and aesthetics, well-installed bay windows are considered an attractive upgrade that can help your home stand out in a competitive real estate market.
Are bay windows energy-efficient in Utah's climate?
Modern bay windows can be very energy-efficient when made with insulated glass and properly sealed vinyl frames. In Utah’s four-season climate, energy efficiency is essential — quality bay windows help reduce heat loss in the winter and limit solar gain in the summer, supporting lower utility bills and improved indoor comfort.
Can bay windows be installed in smaller rooms?
Yes, bay windows are a great way to make small rooms feel larger by creating visual space and allowing more light to enter. Even modest-sized rooms like home offices, breakfast nooks, or small bedrooms can benefit from the openness and brightness that bay windows provide.
How much do bay windows cost in Utah?
Bay window costs in Utah typically range from $1,500 to $4,500 installed, depending on size, materials, and configuration. Contact JDI Windows for a free, same-day estimate specific to your home.
Picture Windows
Do picture windows open?
No, picture windows are fixed and don’t open. This makes them extremely energy-efficient and ideal for large openings. We often pair them with casement or double-hung windows on the sides for ventilation when needed.
How large can picture windows be?
Picture windows can be manufactured in very large sizes, often up to 8 feet wide or more. We’ll help you determine the optimal size for your wall space and structural requirements. For extremely large installations, we may recommend multiple windows or a picture window with sidelites.
Are large picture windows safe?
Yes. Our picture windows use tempered safety glass for large sizes, which is stronger than regular glass and breaks into small, less dangerous pieces if ever broken. We follow all building codes for safety glass requirements.
What are the benefits of picture windows?
Picture windows offer maximum natural light, unobstructed views, superior energy efficiency (no moving parts means no air leaks), cost-effectiveness, design flexibility, and virtually maintenance-free operation. They’re perfect for showcasing Utah’s mountain scenery.
Casement Windows
What's the difference between casement and double-hung windows?
Casement windows swing outward on hinges and crank open, while double-hung windows slide vertically. Casement windows offer better ventilation and tighter seals, making them more energy-efficient. They also provide unobstructed views without a center rail.
Are casement windows secure?
Absolutely. Casement windows feature multi-point locking systems that engage when you close the window, making them one of the most secure window types available. The hook-shaped locks are embedded in the frame and are very difficult to pry open from outside.
Can casement windows be installed anywhere?
Casement windows work great in most locations but require clearance for the outward swing. They’re not ideal for patios, decks, or areas where the opening window might obstruct walkways. We’ll assess your space during your free estimate to recommend the best solution.
How long do casement windows last?
Quality vinyl casement windows can last 20-40 years with proper maintenance. Factors affecting longevity include material quality, installation precision, and exposure to harsh weather. Regular cleaning and hardware lubrication will help extend the life of your windows.
Patio Doors
What's the difference between sliding and French patio doors?
Sliding doors glide horizontally on tracks and don’t require swing clearance, making them ideal for tight spaces or areas with furniture nearby. French doors swing open (inward or outward) and create a wider opening but need clearance for the door swing. Both options offer their own aesthetic and functional advantages.
How secure are sliding patio doors?
Very secure. Our patio doors include multi-point locking systems, anti-lift blocks, and reinforced frames. We also offer optional security bars and smart lock integrations for additional peace of mind.
Can I add a pet door to my patio door?
Yes, we offer patio doors with built-in pet door options. These integrated pet doors maintain the security and energy efficiency of the main door while giving your furry friends the freedom to come and go.
What are the signs I need to replace my patio door?
Common signs include difficulty opening or closing, visible damage or warping, drafts and air leaks, condensation between glass panes, water leakage during rain, increased energy bills, and excessive noise from outside. If you notice any of these issues, it may be time for a replacement.
Awning Windows
Can awning windows be left open during rain?
Yes, that’s one of their primary advantages. The top-hinged design creates a natural awning effect that deflects light rain away from the opening, allowing you to enjoy fresh air even during precipitation. However, during heavy storms, it’s best to close them.
Where are awning windows typically installed?
Awning windows are popular in bathrooms, kitchens, basements, and bedrooms where privacy and ventilation are priorities. They’re often installed higher on walls or combined with picture windows to add ventilation to large glass areas.
Can I combine awning windows with other window types?
Absolutely. Awning windows are frequently paired with picture windows or stacked in groups. This combination allows you to have large fixed glass areas for views while maintaining ventilation options with operable awning units.
Double Slider Windows
What's the difference between single and double slider windows?
Single slider windows have one fixed sash and one operable sash, while double slider windows have two operable sashes that both slide horizontally. Double sliders offer more ventilation flexibility but typically cost slightly more.
Are slider windows energy efficient?
Modern slider windows can be very energy efficient when equipped with Low-E glass and properly sealed frames. While they have more weatherstripping contact points than fixed windows, quality sliders from JDI Windows are designed to minimize air infiltration.
Can slider windows be used for egress?
Yes, slider windows can meet egress requirements for bedrooms when properly sized. Building codes specify minimum opening dimensions for emergency exit windows, and we can help you select sliders that meet these requirements.
Single & Double-Hung Windows
What's the difference between single-hung and double-hung windows?
Single-hung windows have a fixed upper sash and an operable lower sash. Double-hung windows have two operable sashes, so both the top and bottom can be opened. Double-hung windows offer more ventilation flexibility and are easier to clean but typically cost slightly more.
Are double-hung windows good for ventilation?
Yes, double-hung windows provide excellent ventilation because you can open both sashes. Opening the top and bottom simultaneously creates natural convection, where warm air exits through the top while cooler air enters below.
How do tilt-in sashes work?
Tilt-in sashes feature special pivots at the top corners that release the sash from the frame, allowing it to tilt inward at an angle. This gives you access to clean the exterior glass from inside your home. Simply tilt, clean, and press back into place.
Window Installation & Replacement
How do I know if I need new windows?
Signs you may need new windows include: drafts or cold spots near windows, difficulty opening or closing, visible condensation between glass panes, increased energy bills, rotting or warping frames, excessive outside noise, and windows that won’t stay open. If you notice any of these issues, contact us for a free evaluation.
What's the average energy savings after window replacement?
Our customers typically see a 20-30% reduction in heating and cooling costs after window installation. Given Utah’s hot summers and cold winters, quality window replacement translates to significant annual savings on your utility bills.
Do I need a permit for window replacement?
Most window replacement installations don’t require permits if you’re replacing with the same size and type. However, homes in historic districts may have additional requirements. JDI Windows handles all window permitting as part of our installation service when needed.
What warranty do you offer?
We offer comprehensive warranty coverage on both our products and installation. Our vinyl windows come with manufacturer warranties, and we stand behind our installation work. Specific warranty details will be provided during your free estimate.
